Can AI actually produce production-quality Figma files?

With the right setup, yes. The AI UI Designer connects to your Figma file, reads your design system (components, variables, typography styles), and builds new frames using those primitives instead of from scratch. Output looks like your design system because it is your design system. Where AI is weaker: brand-defining moments (the hero visual for a new product launch, the illustrated onboarding sequence). For those, most founders use the AI to rough in 5 directions and then hire a specialist or direct the AI more heavily. For everything in between — feature mockups, marketing pages, ad variants — it ships.

How does it critique designs without lived taste?

The critique layer works against explicit criteria: hierarchy (one primary action per screen), density (minimum touch target, readable line length), contrast (WCAG ratios), consistency (against your design system), and known anti-patterns (24 dark patterns from Deceptive Design's taxonomy). It will not tell you whether the design is beautiful — that's your job. It will tell you if 40% of the reasons a screen feels off are mechanical and fixable, which is usually 80% of what a senior designer would flag in a review.

What about original illustration and brand identity?

Brand identity is where AI has the most variable results. For illustration, Midjourney and Gemini Imagen can produce beautiful single assets but struggle with coherent sets (the same character in 8 poses). The AI UI Designer shines at taking a defined visual language and extending it — if you have a style guide, it ships 40 more assets in that style reliably. If you need the style guide itself, that's still a human-led project in 2026, usually run with AI assistance in the mood board and exploration phase rather than the final decision.

How does it work with the AI Frontend Engineer?

Tightly. The AI UI Designer ships Figma with design tokens and component names that match the codebase. The AI Frontend Engineer reads the Figma file via API, extracts the spec, and writes JSX that uses the same tokens. In practice the handoff that used to cost days of back-and-forth compresses to minutes. Both agents reference the same design system source of truth (your tokens file in code, mirrored in Figma variables). When they disagree — e.g., the mockup uses a spacing value not in the system — the designer flags it for you to decide whether to extend the system or change the mockup.

When do I still need a human designer?

Three cases. First: brand-defining launches (new company, new product category, rebrand) where the strategic visual decisions need a specialist. Second: complex interaction design where motion, timing, and state machines carry the product (fintech dashboards, editor interfaces). Third: accessibility audits for regulated industries where certification requires a human review. Outside those, most founders report that the AI UI Designer plus their own taste is enough through the first $1M in revenue. Hiring a human designer after that is often a choice about speed and leverage, not quality.
